This is just a reminder that the first ALOC meeting after summer break is this Saturday at 1:30 on September 17th. This is a regular meeting with a demo featuring the artwork of Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson. A few other reminders for the meeting:

Please bring a nice nibble for sharing and any summer creations--paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures-- you're especially proud of (along with an easel if necessary.)
Those artists who wish to participate should bring a small ACEO (artist's trading card) artwork for exchanging. This was very popular the last few meetings and we'd like to continue the practice.
Jerry Bell will have raffle tickets for a trip for two to Switzerland to benefit Crealde's biggest fundraiser of the year. Tickets are normally $20/ea. or a block of eight for $100. They are available for the ALOC group at the block rate of $12.50/ea. If you'd like to take a chance, as well as support a worthy cause, please make checks payable to "Crealde."
Donations of art supplies/equipment for the children's art class at Crealde are needed on an ongoing basis and are greatly appreciated. Please bring donations to the meeting or contact Gayle Bell, 407-672-1001. Thanks!

The Historic Sanford Welcome Center invites all artists to the Sanford Art Walk, a juried art show in the Welcome Center, and a walking tour of art venues located in historic downtown Sanford. In conjunction with Crealde School of Art's 15th Annual Benefit Auction Fundraiser, raffle tickets for an all-expenses paid, deluxe week-long trip for two to Switzerland are available. The trip is designed by Peter Schreyer, Executive Director of Crealde and native of Switzerland. Check here for images and stories from previous tours.

Tickets are $20/each or eight for $100. ALOC could pool their resources and buy blocks of eight for $12.50 each. All proceeds will benefit Crealde. This is Crealdé's largest fund raising event, which enables them to continue their mission to stimulate the creative process inherent in each individual through hands-on education in the visual arts. Paint-Out reunion Sept. 24th

The CFPAA Artists group is sponsoring a paint-out reunion in celebration of when the plein air movement began in Florida. Ten years ago in September, a group of painters met on the website “wetcanvas” and organized an all-inclusive paint-out in Ozello, FL. From that day on, lasting friendships were formed and Plein Air Florida and many local art groups were created. CFPAA was the Orlando-based group. In celebration of how far Florida plein air painting has advanced in ten years, CFPAA is sponsoring a one-day reunion on September 24^th in Ozello Florida. Painting sites have been mapped out and prizes will be awarded to the top three artists choice awards. After painting all day, there will be a showing of the art and dinner at Peck’s Old Port Cove, 139 N Ozello Trl, Crystal River. Many artists will be staying over Friday and Saturday night, making it a full weekend. Corporate rates have been secured at the Holiday Inn Express.

There is no fee to join. This is a good way to start off the painting season since it has been so HOT all summer long. Everyone is invited!! Pass the word.

Learn how to create an abstract painting from your own photos, as Barbara shows you step by step the process she uses through her computer and photo printer. Once the image is abstracted, she will teach cropping, editing, composition options and color balance, and then demonstrate her painting process.
Barbara Tiffany has been teaching art since 1984 and is represented by Arts on Douglas in New Smyrna Beach. She has studied with, among others, master painter Maury Hurt. Everything she accomplishes with her own art is shared with her students.

Well ALOC Members we are having a show at the Gallery One Artist Gallery at 101 E. Dakin Ave. Kissimmee. To be in the show sign up at the meeting the month of March and April and pay the fee.
Fee: $5.00 one painting
$10.00 two paintings
No Refunds if you can't make it..
If the gallery sells your work you receive all moneys, the gallery takes no commission.
You drop off your artwork on May 3rd, and 4th -Tuesday and Wed. Time: 10am to 7pm
Reception: May 6th - Time 6pm to 9pm Please bring a bottle of wine for the reception( you can get wine 3 bottles for $10.00 at walgreens or CVS)
Art Pick up if not sold is May 31st June 1st and 2nd.
If the artwork is not pick up with in a week after these pick up dates, the artwork becomes the property of the gallery. As we are limited in space, between each show of work.

ALOC Meeting on March 19th to feature demo by Nancy Baur Dillen

Nancy Baur Dillen, retired professor of art at Brevard Community College, merges imagery of the real and unreal, the romantic and the dramatic, in a recent series of surreal landscapes. Two concepts reflected in Dillen's work are the need to accept things as they are, and the need to dream. She creates her unusual and inventive paintings with hand-made oil paints which she creates with dry pigments and burnt plate oil, the binder for intaglio ink. Be sure to attend this exciting demo.

On Saturday 08-14-2010, Marsha DeBroske - sculptor, painter, teacher - led a "Powertex Workshop" for ALOC members at the Creative Spirit Art Gallery, in Orlando, FL. Eleven members participated, we learned a lot, and we had a blast!

What is Powertex? It is a fabric hardener that will adhere to everything but plastic, is AP approved for non-toxicity, and gives a very professional look to your sculpture when dry. Other extras can enhance the final effect, such as ColorTricks powders, and StoneArt.

Marsha is a great teacher; she gave us an unbelievable amount of attention, answered many questions, and made sure we all went home with a finished piece.

Here are pictures of our trip to Powertex land. These are the 5 steps we followed to complete our sculptures:
Step #1: For a human shape, cut 3 electrical wires to a certain size, & twist them in order to create a body with 2 legs, 2 arms, a head, and shoulders. For other shapes, just make sure you strenghten the "backbone/spine" with extra wire.

Step #2: Build your sculpture with foil. Cover each foil layer with masking tape, and keep building until desired form is achieved.

Step #3: Cover the entire piece with Masking tape - be patient!

Step #4: Dip pre-cut strips of fabric in the gooey Powertex - [Powertex comes in 5 colors: Bronze, Ivory, Transparent, Lead, and Terra Cotta. We played with Bronze.] - and cover the Masking-taped form throughout. Add hair and clothing as desired, also dipped in the Powertex.

In mid-afternoon, the U.S. Powertex representative Regine Dossche and her daughter Valerie demonstrated more interesting possibilities for Powertex when mixed with StoneArt, and other cool products. Visit http://powertexcreations.com/index.html for more information.

Step #5: With a brush, paint on iridescent-colored powders [we used Bronsgold and Terragreen ColorTricks] for highlights in your sculpture. Voila!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Art with Heart fundraiser at MAC. We've raised almost $6300 to date. Tom Swartz, a fellow artist, is leading another fundraiser at his church, the Altamonte Chapel, with some of the left over paintings as well as new donations. As before, all proceeds will go to Doctors without Borders. I'll post the flyer. We will send in the additional money we've collected as well as proceeds from the auction on May 30th after the event is concluded. Thanks for everyone's help.

Below is a letter sent to the Orlando Sentinel today voicing concerns about the proposed Maitland Art Center (MAC)/Maitland Historical Society merger. Please send this link to any others who need to be informed (especially MAC members who may be called on to vote on the merger.) Those who are not MAC members--now may be a good time to became one and ensure that MAC is properly cared for so future generations can enjoy it. Thanks

It was disturbing to find out recently that the annual fundraiser, pARTicipation, for the Maitland Art Center (MAC) has been cancelled for 2010. This event is key in helping to raise money necessary to keep the center operating successfully and is especially critical in this difficult recession. The reason given for the cancellation is due to possible conflicts with the Maitland Historical Society’s fundraiser. This is especially troubling considering the Maitland Historical Society recently received a $1 million donation from The Morgan Group, developers of the Village at Lake Lily. It appears the crucial fundraiser this year should be for MAC which has not been the beneficiary of such largess.

Promoting one organization at the expense of the other calls into doubt the assurances given to MAC members that the proposed merger between MAC and the Maitland Historical Society will be mutually beneficial and will not allow one group to dominate the other.
MAC is a community treasure as well as a long-standing vital asset to the local creative arts community. It must not be starved of the critical funding it needs to survive these tough times. We can’t afford to let any of our fine art institutions be mishandled and we urge everyone to become involved and ask pertinent questions about the merger and its impact to MAC. Actions do speak louder than words and it now seems the merger between MAC and Maitland Historical Society doesn’t appear to be as positive as it’s been portrayed.

Marianna Ross - "Luminous Spring!" Exhibit

On Sunday March14th, Marianna Ross, one of ALOC's beloved artist and member, held a reception at her Solo Exhibit "Luminous Spring" at the University Club of Winter Park, FL. What a treat to admire her beautiful Silk Paintings adorning the walls of the large gallery space!

At 3pm Marianna put her painting apron on and demonstrated the art of Silk Painting.

Marianna explained the technical aspects of Silk Painting, and invited all guests to participate and discover fabric painting on silk.

Many people enjoyed the process and painted in groups. It was an interesting and creative afternoon. Bravo, Marianna!

Marianna received her MFA in Painting from the University of Arizona, and a BFA from San Francisco Art Institute. She retired in 2006 as Professor of Art, Seminole State College, after teaching 34 years in several states.

"Art with Heart" fundraiser for Haitian relief at Maitland Art Center

We are seeking artwork donations which will raise money for the disaster in Haiti. 100% of proceeds will go to Doctors without Borders operating in Haiti. Maitland Art Center is agreeable to letting us use their facilities for this purpose on Fri., Feb. 12. This is the Friday before Valentine's Day, so we're calling this fundraiser "Art with Heart." Anyone interested, please email me or call so I can get a list together of artwork. Please submit the minimum you will accept for your art. Be sure to initialize each sheet of the application and put "ALOC" into the Exhibit Title line on the first page. She needs this info ASAP in order to keep track of entries, prepare cards, price lists, etc. for show. When the paintings are dropped off on the 1st of March Arlene will verify submissions against compiled list and collect a $5.00 fee. This recently completed painting was inspired by a scene in near Owls Head, Maine some years ago -- although I saw it during the day it led me to wonder about it at night -- how it might look on a chilly summer night in the full moon -- and who would be there to witness it?

Cold

It's too cold here in Central Florida -- we had sleet, ice and snow in some places yesterday. Not living in a wintry climate I tend not to paint too many winter scenes -- this one happens to be something I did many years ago from am memory of those fantastic sunsets in Upstate New York!
